Get Your 2010 Christmas Gift Ideas Now

Posted on November 12th, 2010

People like to get your gift shopping done in time for Christmas; you may want to start looking now. Once again, this year, electronics are among the forefront of requested gifts. Unlike previous years, though, with the cost of electronics dropping considerably as the months and years go by, the majority of these are not necessarily ‘big ticket’ items.
Feel free to do the usual and buy your kids socks, jeans, underwear, and other clothing items. You’ll have no trouble figuring out what the current fashion trends are for all ages – the shops are full of them. Regardless of the shop you purchase your clothing gifts at, though, be wary of Christmas themed garments and accessories. If you truly want to get clothes for people as gifts, don’t attempt to decorate them with Christmas cheer – they’ll wear the item once to indulge you and it’ll never see the light of day again after that.
Again, age is not a factor when it comes to most electronics. While you’re not going to want to buy your 2 year old an iPad or an iPod, people of all ages will enjoy such items as a Wii or the new Xbox Kinect. While there are some die-hard PlayStation fans out there, most games are also available on the Wii and the Xbox and each of these systems has far superior online interaction platforms than the PlayStation. They also cost considerably less than the PlayStation. These are two of the best Christmas gift ideas that you can put into play. Each of these gaming platforms will get you, your kids, your parents, and your friends up off of the couch for a full body entertainment experience.
Other electronics that are in high demand again this year are cameras. You can get some fairly decent cameras these days that take good quality pictures for a fairly low price. Another hot item this year is the BluRay player. You could get a PlayStation at an inflated price for the BluRay option, or you can spend quite a bit less and get a straight player instead.
Spend a little more on your Christmas gift ideas early and be amazed at how much more enjoyable the holiday season is when it arrives.

Tips for Buying Computer Microphones

Posted on November 4th, 2010

Computer microphones are a valuable addition to any PC and they greatly increase interactivity and communication levels. You can use a microphone for performing various tasks, both business and fun related. There is a huge variety of models on the market, ranging from microphones that you can buy for a few dollars and going all the way to expensive, high tech desktop microphones.
Well, different types of microphones have different prices. Cheap microphones have low prices for some good reasons: they offer average to low quality sound, they break down more easily and you can’t use them successfully in all applications that support a microphone. The materials they are manufactured from have to be cheap, which eliminates the idea of high quality, so the end product is of lower reliability. And at this price, you can be sure bulk manufacturing is present and quality tests are quick and far from rigorous.
In most cases, microphones that come for a higher price have better sound quality and more features. Such microphones will have noise canceling filters, which help diminish background noise. Distortion filters and integrated circuits also help keep voice sounds clear and accurate. The materials used for more expensive microphones also last longer – plastic doesn’t crack so easily and if you drop it on the floor you know that the internal components are well protected.
Determining what price range you are in and what model to purchase depends heavily on the purpose you have in mind for the microphone. If you are going to use it just to chat with friends online, in that case, spending a lot of money on a professional computer microphone is not justified. Maybe if you are planning to hold business conferences over the Internet, then you ought to get a better microphone that will allow the discussion to be continuous and clear, without noise distortion.
Giving vocal commands to your computer or dictating to word processing software with speech recognition capabilities is another use for desktop microphones. Quality should be first here – speech recognition software is very sensitive and demands a high quality microphone and sound card. Recording your voice and inserting it into music tracks is possible, but a high quality microphone is absolutely essential in this case.

Warnings of USB Network Storage Adapter

Posted on November 2nd, 2010

By using a central storage repository, files are placed there once and streamed or copied from there as needed, any time and from anywhere on the internal network, even over the internet. One less expensive way to share files, even printers over the home network, is to use a multi port USB, or Universal Serial Bus, Network Storage Adapter.
Many network storage enclosures are currently offered by several vendors that promise simple sharing of serial bus connected devices over the home network. Before you buy any of such universal serial bus network storage adapters, make sure you understand what such “sharing over the network” means and any caveats that may apply. By understanding these before the purchase, you will be able to install and take advantage of their features instantly without delay or frustration.
The three warnings in using universal serial bus network storage adapters are: first, USB devices are not meant to be used simultaneously by multiple users, second, universal serial bus devices, although designed to draw power from the bus, cannot be using too much power, and, third, your hard drive may need reformatting before being used inside the network storage adapter.
USB devices such as printers, hard drives, cameras, have never been designed to be used by several users at the same time. Unlike a normal networked hard drive, in some network storage enclosures, a user must request access to a particular device, and the dedicated connection must first be established before the drive or device can be used. That adds an additional step to the process and, for some purposes, can make the universal serial bus “shared” device truly unusable. Not all USB network storage enclosures have that requirement. So check ahead.
Many universal serial bus devices require power over the USB connection itself. Hard drives especially can take up a significant amount of power. So, especially when connecting several hard drives to one USB network storage enclosure, either chooses hard drives that get their own power from the mains, or make sure their power requirements of the bus connector are manageable and sufficiently small.
Your hard drive may need reformatting to be used inside a USB network storage enclosure. This can be an unpleasant surprise when you take your external hard drive that you have been using on Windows, install it in a network enclosure, follow directions (that leisurely advise you your data may be lost), and find all your data on your hard drive disappear. Likewise, since the disk format that these drives use will not be compatible with Microsoft Windows, pulling the hard drive out of the enclosure, and inserting it back into the connector on your computer or net book will not provide your data.
